Moonlighting

Hi Everyone,

As you know from last month’s Moonlighting with Insomniac, this year we’re focusing on diversity and women in the game development industry.  That theme continues this month with our guest speaker, Insomniac’s very own Gameplay Programmer, Brandi Wilcox.

Brandi Wilcox, Gameplay Programmer

Brandi graduated from Smith College with a BA in Physics and received a MFA from USC Interactive Media Division (now the Interactive Media and Games Division). While attending USC, Brandi was a design scripter intern for Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time at the Burbank studio.  She later joined Insomniac’s team permanently as a scripter at the North Carolina studio.  A few years later Brandi transitioned into being a gameplay programmer and that is the role she currently holds here at Insomniac. Just a few months ago, Brandi celebrated her fifth year anniversary here at Insomniac Games… she’s had quite a journey!

On another note, this month’s Moonlighting will be pushed back a week.  Angela and I are attending the Great Places to Work Conference the first week of April, so we’ll be unable to host Moonlighting at our regular time.  Please join Angela and I, along with our guest Brandi, on Wednesday, April, 13th at 1:30 PM PT / 4:30 PM ET.

The comments section is open now for your questions so feel free to post away and we’ll answer you when we log in on 4/13/16.  Please remember, we want to encourage open communication and informative discussions but we also need to be respectful around the subject. What subject are we being respectful of?  Not sure that this is needed – but maybe I’m missing something.

Looking forward to talking with you soon!

Here’s a quick bio from Sing:

“My name is Sing Ji and  I am a lead artist at Insomniac Games. I have been working in the game industry for the last 8 years.  I started working as a concept artist at Disney R+D in Glendale right out of Art Center College of Design.  After Disney, I  worked at a casual games company called Big Fish Games as a lead artist. I’ve been at Insomniac Games for 5 years, and for about a year I have been working on one of Insomniac’s latest title, Song of the Deep.  I work with environment, character, and FX artists to shape the look and feel of the game.  I’m looking forward to chatting with you, and answering all your questions on WED!”

Please join Angela and I, along with our guest Sing, on Wednesday, March 2nd at 1:30 PM PT / 4:30 PM ET.

Hi Everyone,

As you know from last month’s Moonlighting with Insomniac, this year we’re focusing on diversity and women in the game development industry.  That theme continues this month with our guest speaker, WIGI Engineer, Sharan Volin.

Sharan has been programming games for the past decade. After an 8-year web development career, she went back to school for a second Bachelors in Computer Science (Games) at USC. With her Actionscript background, she worked on many web and Facebook games, including Shrek the Third for Activision and National Geographic: Dogtown and Mavis Beacon games for Collision Studios.  In 2013 she started at Electronic Arts in Los Angeles (Danger Close) to do UI Programming in Scaleform for Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel. She’s been focused on UI programming ever since.

After a short stint on a music-based virtual world game, she moved to San Diego to work on the Landmark/Everquest Next team at Sony Online Entertainment. Her most recent project was an unannounced console title for Blind Squirrel Games.

Sharan is also currently going for her third Master’s degree. Through the USC Distance Education Network, she’ll soon have an M.S. in Computer Science.

Please join Angela and I, along with our guest Sharan, on Wednesday, February 3rd at 1:30 PM PT / 4:30 PM ET.

The comments section is open now for your questions so feel free to post away and we’ll answer you when we log in on 2/3/16.  Please remember, we want to encourage open communication and informative discussions but we also need to be respectful around the subject. Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year!!

With the New Year comes a new direction for our interactive blog, Moonlighting with Insomniac, that we are pretty excited about!   2016 will be all about bringing more focus to diversity in the game development industry.  While Moonlighting with Insomniac was developed to give you face time with our recruitment team and ALL of our developers, we are choosing to highlight female developers at Insomniac and have them provide us with their viewpoints/advice on careers in the industry and their particular discipline.

Happy-New-Year-Wallpaper-Wishes

We hope that by featuring the awesome, talented women in our studio we can inspire other women developers both working and aspiring to work in the industry.  This is an open forum where you can come speak freely on the topic.  We’ll be advertising our blogs via Twitter and LinkedIn so if its something you’re passionate about as well – please help us spread the word by sharing, re-tweeting and re-posting.

Our first guest this year is Nina Fricker, Insomniac’s very own Animation Lead.  Nina has been working in the game industry for over 15 years, 8 of those at Insomniac. Up until two years ago her primary roles had been providing rigging and scripting support as a Character TD. Now she is leading the animation department in the North Carolina studio.

Hi Everyone –
Thanks for checking out our Moonlighting blog! We are moving our monthly chat to Thursday, OCT 8th, at 1:30 PM PT/4:30 PM ET this month.  You ask why?  Both of Kerri and I are out of the office traveling – Kerri for internal training purposes, and I’ll be attending a Career Fair for Interns.  Same time, same space – just one day later. Hope you understand, and  we will be sharing some insights on what we were doing, as it’s important stuff!  Who doesn’t love training and talking with potential interns?  Actually these  two topics are what Kerri and I hope to cover in this edition of Moonlighting, along with any other questions that are raised! Remember – this is your open forum to ask us all about Insomniac Games, our culture, our studios, and much more.

Looking forward to chatting with you!

Thanks for being flexible!
Until then –
Kerri and Angela

Hi Moonlighters!

The month we’re heading back to the open forum structure this month to allow you to make the decisions on what we talk about!  You can also make sure your questions are being answered even when you can’t join us because we’ve decided to leave the comments section open at all times!  WHAT?  Yes – you can ask us (Angela and I) a question at any time your heart desires and we will get back to you as soon as we can.  We will still be covering topics that pertain to recruiting, HR, culture and all things that fall in those categories here at Insomniac Games.

Q&A

Keep in mind – we still won’t be covering the topics that are on our company’s other blogs or community pages. (To do that – just head on over to the Community forum or Twitter or Facebook and ask away – it’s that easy! )  But this does open the door for you to ask a question at ANY TIME!  Very exciting if I do say so myself.

Our next live Blog Cast will be September 2nd (the first WED of the month) at 1:30 PT / 4:30 ET.

Talk soon!

Kerri & Angela
