Our new partnership with EA Partners

Posted on May 25, 2010
Hey guys, Ted Price here,

I wanted to speak directly to you, our fans, about some big news for Insomniac. Over the last 16 years, you’ve supported Insomniac by buying over 35 million copies of our games. You’ve explored with us the worlds of Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance on PSOne, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. And you've interacted with us directly through our online communities. In other words, we've gotten to know each other pretty well.

Lately, many of you have been asking, “what’s next?” Today, we’re excited to announce that we have created a brand new universe and franchise for you to experience in the coming years. As we develop it, one of our goals is to provide an awesome experience for as many players as possible. With that in mind, we’re working with EA Partners to bring this title to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

You may be wondering why we’re announcing this game now, and how it relates to our existing projects. We’ve been developing games on an annual pace during the last 16 years. One thing that has become apparent to us though is that in order to live up to our own high standards of quality, we want to give ourselves more development time to iterate and polish our games. All future Insomniac titles will benefit from longer development cycles, which will directly benefit you, our fans.

We know many of you are extremely loyal to the PlayStation family, and especially to Resistance and Ratchet & Clank. We are too. Our relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment is still very strong, and continues as we develop additional projects exclusively for PlayStation 3 - projects that will take full advantage of our additional development time.

This is an exciting time for everyone at Insomniac – we look forward to continuing to create the high-quality experiences you’ve come to expect from us. From all of us here, thanks again for all your support. It truly means a lot to us.

I kind of saw this one coming but still am a little disappointed that they are going multiplatform but most of all i hope that this doesnt hurt their relationship with Sony (seems like it wont)/

Wondering which system the game will be developed on. If it's playstation 3 then I won't be hurt at all by this, but if it's developed on the 360 and ported over all have no reason to get it on my PS3

Great. So your now developing for Xbox meaning worse graphics and less content. I thought you guys were aspiring to be like Naughty dog or Guerilla Games. Im very disappointed.

Yeah I hope the Xbox360 won't hold back the games...also, don't use the X360 as leadplatform or you guys just might aswell go develop for X360 alone, saving us from crappy ports.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, it's stupid but I kinda feel betrayed. That said, it's good news, it's great for the 360 owner (btw why not releasing games on PC while you're at it?). I like the longer development times too. Not that I love waiting longer to get games, but games should be released when they're ready, and if you need more than one year to make a game, then it's fine.

I have no problem with this, just as long as you make no 360 exclusives.

i think its good that another Ip is being developed, but i really really hope resistance doesnt suffer from this....looking at 2, 3 really needs to be good. I also hope that this new ip is equal on both systems ( Graphics, content, etc.) I don not want to see 360 getting exclusive content. Cannot wait for E3!

very bad news for all of us, your fans, i love ratchet and resistance but now, you won't be able to do a great games because 360 has less capacity, less storage, and many other things. i hope this desicion doesn't afect your develop and great performance on ps3, good luck. and come back soon

Hey Xabb---

Don't worry - we still plan on making awesome games, and we hope you're excited about a new universe from us.

I'm gonna say that I, like I'm guessing most Insomniac fans, wish you stayed exclusive to Playstation but also look forward to the new IP even though it'll be multiplatform.
I guess I'm wondering most what this will mean for the next console generation. This generation will see a Resistance maybe in the coming year and maybe a 4th and/or another Ratchet. Will we see both properties in the next gen? Or will new IP's for multiplat be the biggest way forward?
Anyway, you guys are a hard-working and proven dev team and I'm sure you put alot of thought into this decision so best of luck.

(1) Loads of congratulations. Sounds like fun times at insomniac with a bit of stretch and nervousness thrown in - the best kind of thing to work on.

(2) within these announcements there is an implicit acknowledgement that there will be more resistance and ratchet - good news!

(3) Owning both PS3 and xbox360 mean that multiplatform is no worries for me, but developing some titles mutliplatform and some PS3 exclusive - is potentially good ,not bad news for sony - the multiplatform will encourage more to get into PS3 for the exclusives.

(4) E3 will show whether there is a game out this year or whether the longer development times have struck already. The announcements suggest that the multiplatform team started 18 months ago - around the end of R2, so whether many of the team moved on to that, or stuck with R3 only insomniac knows! Three (at least ? ) development teams give me some hope 3 games being in production at a time, but the xbox 360 could take on the equivalent of one dev team (although presumably not), leaving 2 games in production. The only downside of today is that R3 seems a little less likely this year - although i still have hope. Not long to find out!

(5) Enjoying the full moon - I sort of assume it is back to engage and delight fans - but also hopefully means there is a game announcement about to happen!

(6) Nicely planned PR today

(7) Congrats again to insomniac. Fun fun fun!
